Shalimar Houseboats has hosted travellers on Nigeen Lake since 1982 — quieter and cleaner than the main Dal, with the Himalayas on the horizon and the old city ten minutes away.
Every suite is hand-carved Kashmiri walnut, with thick wool rugs, en-suite bathrooms and a sundeck that looks straight down the lake. Breakfast is brought to your room by shikara.
You don't check in to a houseboat. You're welcomed onto one.
